Organic farming welfare claims require careful scrutiny. Organic certification was designed primarily around environmental and food safety principles — animal welfare was partially incorporated but is not the central purpose. Outdoor access requirements, while meaningful, do not specify meaningful space or behavioral opportunity. Some organic broiler chickens never reach the outdoor area because the housing design creates barriers to outdoor use. Some organic dairy cows have pasture access for the minimum period required without the enrichment, social stability, or veterinary access that genuinely high-welfare farming requires. Organic certification is better than conventional in some welfare dimensions and comparable or even worse in others. Dedicated welfare certifications provide more reliable welfare assurance than organic alone.
