Welfare Considerations

Land crabs and hermit crabs are frequently treated as disposable novelties rather than animals with genuine welfare needs. Hermit crabs sold in painted shells at souvenir shops typically die within weeks or months from improper care. Those given appropriate care — deep substrate for molting, access to both fresh and saltwater, social companions, varied diet, and proper humidity — live for decades. The welfare gap between typical care and adequate care is enormous for these often-overlooked animals.

What You Can Do

Never purchase hermit crabs from souvenir shops or beach vendors
If you keep hermit crabs, provide at minimum 10 gallons per crab with deep coconut fiber substrate
Offer both fresh and marine-grade saltwater for hermit crabs at all times
Keep hermit crabs in groups of at least three — they need social companionship
Paint-free natural shells of multiple sizes should always be available for molting and switching
