Goats are the most widely kept livestock globally, yet among the least studied from a welfare perspective. Understanding their needs helps improve outcomes across multiple production contexts.
Goats are adaptable and resilient animals, which may partly explain why their welfare receives less attention than cattle or pigs. But adaptability does not mean imperviousness to suffering. Disbudding without adequate pain relief causes intense acute pain. Social isolation causes behavioral and physiological stress. Intensive dairy goat systems with high production demands create metabolic stress similar to high-producing dairy cattle. The research gap in goat welfare means many practices continue without evidence-based assessment.
