Rabbits are the third most popular pet in many countries but also among the most frequently kept in inadequate conditions. Understanding their true needs dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
Rabbit welfare suffers from widespread misconceptions — that they are easy, low-maintenance pets suitable for children, that they enjoy being picked up and held, and that a small cage is adequate housing. In reality, rabbits need large living spaces, a companion rabbit, unlimited hay, and an owner who understands their subtle communication. Many rabbits live short, unhappy lives in inadequate conditions. The RWAF minimum standard of 3m x 2m x 1m living space is far larger than typical pet store cages.
