Colony collapse disorder and ongoing honeybee population declines have drawn enormous attention. Understanding the welfare dimensions alongside the ecological ones provides a fuller picture.
Honeybee colony welfare is collective rather than individual — welfare is assessed at the colony level as individual bees are highly interdependent. Colony-level stressors including pesticide exposure, disease, poor nutrition from monoculture pollen sources, and transport stress reduce colony health and lifespan. The welfare of individual bees within troubled colonies is uncertain given questions about bee sentience, but colony collapse clearly disrupts complex social organization and causes mass bee death. Reducing pesticide exposure and supporting nutritionally diverse forage are the highest-impact welfare interventions.
