Mayflies spend years as aquatic larvae before emerging as adults for just a day or two. Their mass emergences are ecological spectacles, but water quality decline threatens their survival.
Mayfly larvae experience the full range of freshwater pollution stressors: oxygen depletion from eutrophication, toxic agricultural chemicals, siltation that smothers the streambed substrate they inhabit, and thermal stress from climate warming. Each of these impairs development, causes physiological distress, and increases larval mortality. Whether larvae experience suffering in a morally relevant sense is uncertain, but their role as indicators of ecosystem health links their welfare to that of many sentient species that depend on them.
