Whirligig Beetle Welfare: Binocular Vision and Water Quality

Whirligig beetles have compound eyes divided to see both above and below the water surface simultaneously. Their population health reflects the quality of freshwater ecosystems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Whirligig beetles are sensitive indicators of pond and lake health. Acidification from acid rain and agricultural runoff impairs their respiratory physiology and disrupts the ripple detection that they rely on for finding prey. Oxygen depletion from eutrophication causes mortality. Their defensive chemistry offers partial protection from predators but does not buffer against chemical pollution. Large aggregations that once characterised healthy ponds have declined dramatically in many agricultural regions.
