Badgers are at the centre of one of Britain most contentious wildlife management debates. Their welfare extends beyond the culling controversy to include road mortality, snaring, and illegal persecution.
Badger welfare extends well beyond the cull debate. Road kill causes traumatic injuries and death across their range. Snaring — still legal for foxes in the UK and resulting in badger bycatch — causes painful, prolonged capture stress. Badger baiting causes extreme suffering through sustained dog attack. Even legal cull operations, if not conducted to protocol, cause non-instantaneous death. A welfare-focused approach addresses all these sources of harm rather than treating badgers as solely a bTB management question.
