Gharial Welfare: A Conservation Race Against Extinction

Gharials are critically endangered crocodilians found only in a few rivers in South Asia. Their extremely specialised ecology makes them exquisitely vulnerable to river degradation and sand mining.

Welfare Considerations

Gharial welfare in captivity during breeding programmes requires careful management of a species sensitive to handling stress. Low post-release survival suggests that captive-bred individuals may lack the behavioural repertoire needed for life in complex river systems. Welfare in the wild is compromised by prey fish population declines, entanglement in fishing nets, and loss of sandbank basking and nesting sites. River restoration is the foundational welfare intervention — without it, individual welfare improvements cannot translate into population recovery.
