Welfare Considerations

Pike welfare after catch-and-release depends critically on handling technique and water temperature. Improper support of large pike during photography causes internal organ displacement and skeletal damage. Teeth injuries during unhooking without specialist tools cause bleeding and infection risk. Warm-water catches where dissolved oxygen is low recover poorly after the exertion of fighting on tackle. Using a large landing net, supporting the fish horizontally, minimising air exposure, and releasing in cool water are the most important welfare interventions.
