Catfish welfare in aquaculture involves high stocking density in ponds and the associated chronic stress. Their skin sensitivity — with taste and chemical receptors across the body surface — may make them particularly sensitive to water quality degradation. In angling, large wels catfish require experienced handling to support their weight properly and prevent injury during unhooking and photography. Their spine injuries to anglers sometimes lead to retaliatory poor handling. Deep-hooking causes internal bleeding that is frequently fatal.
