Siltation of gravel spawning beds prevents successful reproduction. Abstraction reduces flows that maintain temperature and oxygenation. Climate change is making historical brown trout habitat unsuitable over multi-decade timescales. River restoration — shade planting, flow restoration, agricultural runoff reduction — is the primary welfare intervention.
