Goldfish are the most commonly kept pet fish in the world, yet receive among the worst care. The myth that goldfish have short memories and thrive in small bowls has caused widespread welfare harm.
The welfare of goldfish in typical keeping conditions is extremely poor. Small, unfiltered bowls accumulate ammonia from waste, causing chemical burns to gills and skin. Stunted growth from inadequate space does not indicate a happy fish — it indicates chronic stress and malnutrition. Goldfish kept alone in bare bowls without environmental complexity show abnormal repetitive behaviours. Their intelligence and longevity make poor goldfish husbandry a welfare concern that lasts years, not weeks.
