Welfare Considerations

Incorrect water chemistry — particularly hardness and pH — leads to rapid health decline. Inadequate tank size prevents natural movement patterns. The venomous spine means handling during transport and sale frequently results in injuries to fish (broken spines from improper netting) and to humans. Mortality rates in the trade are high.
