Welfare Considerations

Fish that die post-release are not counted in bag limits, masking the true mortality impact. Longer fights cause greater physiological stress and higher post-release mortality. Commercial bycatch sailfish are typically discarded dead. There are no humane slaughter standards applied to sailfish killed as bycatch or in the small directed fisheries that exist.
