Welfare Considerations

Mange-infected foxes experience intense, debilitating itching, hair loss, and eventual death from exhaustion and hypothermia — a prolonged and severe welfare crisis that wildlife rehabilitators can treat but rarely reach in time. Urban foxes killed by pest controllers may be trapped in snares (which cause prolonged stress and injury) or shot. Cubs separated from vixens die of starvation. Public hostility toward urban foxes leads to welfare harms ranging from deliberate harassment to poisoning.
