Keeping pigs on smallholdings and urban farms has grown in popularity, but welfare problems arise when owners underestimate the social, environmental, and medical needs of these intelligent animals.
Backyard pig-keeping can provide excellent welfare when owners are well-informed and committed. Pigs thrive with companions, rooting substrate, and space to explore. However, the gap between expectation and reality is wide: miniature breeds still grow to 50-100 kg, and the social and behavioral needs of pigs are substantial. Surrendered pigs often end up in rescue overloaded with unwanted animals. Welfare improvements require better pre-purchase education, accessible veterinary care for pet pigs, and clear regulatory frameworks that protect both animals and communities.
