Sea lice represent a systemic welfare problem embedded in open-net salmon farming. When fish are held at high density in coastal net-pens, lice populations build rapidly and treatment options all carry welfare costs — chemicals cause physiological stress, and mechanical removal devices can physically injure fish. Cleaner fish introduced as biological controls are frequently neglected, with high mortality rates. The welfare solution requires system-level change: either closed-containment aquaculture that eliminates lice exposure, or significantly reduced stocking densities that reduce transmission risk.
