Systemic transformation of the food system is the most significant lever for improving animal welfare at scale. Understanding what this transformation looks like helps focus advocacy efforts.
The scale of farm animal welfare harms is so large that systemic food system change is necessary to address it. Individual dietary choices are meaningful but insufficient — systemic change requires policy, corporate behaviour, and technology transitions that shift the entire food environment. A world in which high-welfare animal products are the premium option for those who choose animal foods, while affordable plant-based and cultivated alternatives meet mainstream demand, represents a realistic medium-term welfare improvement scenario. Investment in alternative protein technology, policy reform to level the playing field between conventional and alternative foods, and corporate commitments to welfare improvement all contribute to this transition. Each incremental step reduces the number of animals experiencing welfare harms in the food system.
