Chickens have been shown to possess cognitive abilities far beyond historical assumptions. Understanding chicken intelligence changes the ethical framework for their welfare in farming contexts.
Chicken welfare has historically been assigned low priority partly due to assumptions that chickens are simple, with minimal cognitive and emotional capacity. Research has comprehensively overturned these assumptions. Chickens that show empathic responses to chick distress, numerical reasoning, and perspective-taking are animals whose welfare harms in intensive farming — including separation, frustration, and social disruption — are genuinely significant. Broiler chickens experiencing chronic pain from musculoskeletal disease and hens in enriched cages unable to perform natural behaviour are not merely performing behaviour — they are experiencing negative states in cognitively complex animals. This research foundation should inform welfare standards proportionate to chicken cognitive capacity.
