Catfish are among the most widely farmed freshwater fish globally, but welfare outcomes depend heavily on water quality management that is often inadequate in low-regulation systems.
Catfish welfare is tightly coupled to water chemistry. Dissolved oxygen depletion — triggered by warm temperatures, algae blooms, and decomposing organic matter — causes acute suffocation distress in densely stocked ponds. Fish that survive oxygen crashes often suffer immune suppression and secondary infections. The welfare problem is largely preventable through good management: aeration systems, density reduction, and monitoring. The challenge is that low-margin production economics discourage investment in welfare infrastructure without regulatory or market pressure.
