Welfare Considerations

Denying ducks swimming water in commercial production is not merely a missing luxury but a denial of a fundamental behavioural need. Research by Christine Nicol and others has consistently demonstrated that when given a choice, ducks will preferentially use open water sources and show clear welfare benefits. The EU minimum standard of head-immersion water is a step forward but falls short of what duck biology demands. Higher welfare certification requiring swimming water exists but represents a small fraction of production.
