Ocean acidification welfare consequences are both individual and ecosystem-level. Individual animals including pteropods dissolving in acidifying water, clownfish unable to find home habitats, and shellfish failing to form shells are experiencing direct physiological welfare harm. These harms aggregate across billions of individuals as acidification progresses. The ecosystem-level consequences — disruption of food webs built on calcifying plankton, coral reef collapse, and polar ecosystem destabilisation — represent welfare catastrophe at a scale difficult to comprehend. There is no technological fix for ocean acidification — the only effective welfare intervention is rapid, deep decarbonisation.
