Varroa infestation causes significant welfare harm to individual bees and to colonies as social superorganisms. Infested bees develop deformities, shortened lifespans and increased disease susceptibility. The mite causes bees to suffer from immune compromise, viral infections and physical parasitism simultaneously. Beekeeper responsibility for Varroa management is a genuine animal welfare obligation — allowing colonies to collapse through inaction causes preventable mass suffering. Treatment choices also have welfare implications: oxalic acid treatments, when properly applied, are effective and cause minimal additional harm.
