Population dynamics models are powerful conservation tools but typically treat animals as statistical units rather than individuals with welfare. A welfare-sensitive population biology would consider not just whether a population is growing or declining but the conditions experienced by individuals within it. High-density populations may be growing whilst individual welfare is poor due to food competition and disease. Low-density populations may be declining but surviving individuals may have good welfare in low-competition environments. Integrating welfare indicators into population monitoring would provide a more complete picture of conservation success.
