Welfare Considerations

However, significant welfare challenges remain. Selection for rapid muscle growth has compromised calving ease, causing dystocia that is painful for both cow and calf. Winter housing in barns, while providing shelter, restricts movement and social behaviour. Transport to markets and slaughter remains a major welfare challenge regardless of production system. Welfare improvements in extensive systems require attention to breeding choices, housing conditions and end-of-life handling.
