Microchipping of pets and livestock provides traceability that supports welfare enforcement, lost animal recovery and disease control, with compulsory microchipping for dogs in England and Wales since 2016.
Microchipping provides welfare benefits through multiple pathways. Lost pets that are microchipped can be returned to owners, avoiding the welfare harm of extended periods in rescue centres or on the streets. Traceability of livestock supports disease investigation and welfare enforcement — animals with identified welfare problems can be traced back to their source farm. Compulsory microchipping creates a baseline database that supports enforcement of animal welfare legislation. However, microchipping data is only useful if databases are updated — a compliance gap exists where animals are microchipped but ownership changes are not recorded, reducing the system effectiveness.
