The nuthatch is one of the most distinctive woodland birds, uniquely capable of climbing head-first down tree trunks, and is strongly associated with mature oak woodland with abundant invertebrate life.
Nuthatches are highly dependent on mature deciduous woodland with abundant dead wood and invertebrate diversity. Woodland fragmentation restricts their sedentary lifestyle and prevents recolonisation of isolated patches. The species is sensitive to cold winters when invertebrate availability declines. While population trends are currently positive, the long-term welfare of nuthatch populations depends on maintaining connected networks of ancient woodland.
