Welfare Considerations

The equivalent of 5 trillion individual animals are farmed each year under conditions of extreme crowding, disease stress, and routine mutilation in eyestalk ablation. The precautionary principle that supports extending welfare consideration to animals with pain-sensing capability creates an obligation to improve shrimp farming conditions. The Shrimp Welfare Project and other organizations are beginning to develop evidence-based welfare standards for this enormous industry. The scale of animals involved makes shrimp welfare one of the largest potential welfare improvements available.
