Modern animal welfare science increasingly focuses on positive welfare states including pleasure, play, curiosity, and contentment, moving beyond the minimal standard of absence of suffering toward genuinely good lives for animals.
The shift toward positive welfare represents a fundamental advance in animal welfare ambition. Providing conditions that prevent suffering but deny all opportunities for pleasure, play, curiosity, and social fulfilment no longer meets modern welfare standards. Animals in enriched environments with choice, challenge, and social opportunities show better immune function, lower stress hormones, and more complex behavioural repertoires than those in minimally adequate conditions. Positive welfare science challenges us to ask not just whether animals are suffering but whether they have genuinely good lives, a much higher bar that current farming systems rarely meet.
