Welfare Considerations

The primate pet trade creates suffering at every stage. Wild capture methods are violent — typically involving killing of adult group members to access infants. Infants removed from their groups experience acute trauma and are deprived of the social learning and maternal care critical to primate development. In captivity, pet primates cannot engage in species-appropriate behavior, form natural social bonds, or live anything resembling a normal primate life. The welfare case against the primate pet trade is strong, the conservation case is equally strong, and the only counterargument is human desire for exotic ownership — a preference that does not constitute a welfare justification.
