Kelp forests are among the most productive marine ecosystems on Earth, supporting thousands of species, but are declining due to sea urchin overgrazing, warming oceans, and loss of urchin predators.
Kelp forest ecosystem welfare encompasses both the individual welfare of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals within the forest, and the systemic welfare loss when forests convert to urchin barrens. Sea otters are keystone predators whose removal or absence directly causes urchin population explosions that denude kelp forests.
