Welfare Considerations

Goose welfare encompasses distinct harms across different production systems. In live plucking operations, geese are restrained and feathers removed by hand while conscious, causing visible pain responses and distress. Water deprivation is a welfare failure for geese specifically: they evolved as semi-aquatic birds for whom bathing and preening are essential behaviours for feather maintenance and psychological health. Geese subjected to gavage for foie gras experience the same force-feeding welfare harms as ducks. As highly social, intelligent birds with demonstrable emotional complexity, geese suffer particularly from isolation and the disruption of pair bonds by commercial management. The Responsible Down Standard addresses some concerns but live plucking remains outside its scope in practice.
