Welfare Considerations

Octopus welfare in farming raises concerns that go beyond most invertebrate welfare discussions. These animals are highly intelligent, naturally solitary, and profoundly stressed by confinement with other octopuses. In wild conditions, octopuses spend much of their time in complex problem-solving foraging activities. Confinement in tanks with little enrichment causes visible distress behaviours. High density farming of naturally territorial animals will cause chronic social stress and aggression. There is currently no known humane slaughter method for octopuses. The evidence for octopus sentience is among the strongest for any invertebrate, making commercial octopus farming a serious emerging welfare concern.
