Synthetic biology — the design and construction of novel biological systems — has growing implications for animal welfare through cultured protein production, alternatives to animal testing, and new model organisms.
Synthetic biology has significant potential to reduce demand for animals in food production, testing, and research if developed and deployed at scale. The welfare case for accelerating synthetic biology alternatives is strong: every test replaced by an organoid and every litre of milk produced by fermentation rather than a cow represents real welfare gains. However, new synthetic biology applications also require welfare impact assessment — gene drives, synthetic organisms released into the environment, and novel model organisms all create new welfare questions.
