Feedlot welfare is shaped by the same fundamental tension as other forms of intensive animal farming: production efficiency and animal welfare interests point in different directions. Respiratory disease is partly a function of the transport, commingling, and density inherent to feedlot production. Digestive disorders arise from the high-grain diets that maximise weight gain. These are not incidental problems fixable by management alone but structural features of the system. Meaningful welfare improvement requires changes to stocking density, diet management, housing design, and disease prevention protocols.
