The production of conventional eggs causes significant welfare harm to hens; egg-free alternatives are expanding rapidly across food product categories.
Egg production welfare challenges cannot be fully resolved within conventional farming systems because male chick culling and slaughter at spent hen age are inherent to the production model. Even the highest-welfare free-range systems involve these practices. Egg-free baking and cooking alternatives, and longer-term alternatives through precision fermentation, offer paths to genuine welfare improvement for one of the largest sources of avian suffering in the food system.
