Veganism and animal welfare share many goals but differ in their philosophical foundations and practical priorities, and understanding the relationship helps both movements be more effective.
The relationship between veganism and animal welfare advocacy is often presented as a conflict but is more accurately understood as complementary approaches addressing the same fundamental concern. Veganism addresses the systemic driver of most farmed animal suffering through personal and cultural change; welfare reform addresses the immediate suffering of animals in current systems. Both are needed. Welfare advocates who dismiss veganism as naive and vegan advocates who dismiss welfare reform as capitulation to exploitation both weaken the overall movement. The most effective approaches combine both.
