Marine Protected Areas improve fish population welfare by reducing fishing pressure, habitat destruction, and the chronic stress associated with depleted ecosystems.
Marine Protected Areas generate welfare benefits for fish and other marine animals that are real and substantial but largely invisible in public and policy discussions. Fish in heavily fished areas experience chronic stress from encounter with fishing gear, habitat degradation, and population depletion. Recovery within MPAs reduces this chronic welfare pressure across entire communities of species. The conservation and welfare cases for ocean protection are strongly aligned: the same policy — expanding and enforcing no-take MPAs — serves both agendas simultaneously.
