The exotic pet market creates a supply of appealing small reptiles at low prices that masks the significant welfare investment their care actually requires. Reptiles that cannot regulate their temperature cannot digest food, fight infection, or behave normally — chronic incorrect temperature management causes suffering that is invisible to owners who do not understand the biology. Welfare improvement requires both consumer education at point of sale and minimum welfare standards for reptile keeping in legislation.
