Heat stress in cattle causes genuine suffering that is both individual and systemic. Panting, reduced movement, crowding at water sources, and behavioral agitation are observable indicators of thermal distress. In severe cases, cattle collapse and die from heat stroke — a welfare failure that represents the visible endpoint of inadequate heat mitigation. The welfare problem is worsening as climate change increases both the frequency and duration of heat events in key production regions. Heat mitigation infrastructure — shade, cooling systems, modified feeding schedules — is available, cost-effective relative to productivity losses, and directly reduces animal suffering.
