The cognitive complexity of chickens means that the deprivations of industrial poultry systems — overcrowded barns, no access to outdoor environments, inability to forage, lack of perches or dust-bathing opportunities — cause genuine psychological as well as physical suffering. Broiler chickens are bred to grow so fast that many cannot walk by slaughter weight, adding physical pain to behavioural frustration. Welfare improvements including slower-growing breeds, enriched housing, and outdoor access are proven to improve outcomes significantly.
