Welfare Considerations

Chinchillas are frequently purchased as low-maintenance pets but are in fact among the most demanding small mammals to keep properly. Their long lifespan, temperature sensitivity, dust bathing requirements, social needs, and activity patterns make them unsuitable for many households, particularly those with young children. Surrender rates are high. Chinchillas that overheat can die rapidly, and those kept in isolation show reduced welfare and abnormal behaviours. Responsible ownership requires substantial commitment and appropriate conditions.
