The paradox of axolotl conservation is that the species faces extinction in the wild while thriving in captivity in enormous numbers. Captive axolotls, when kept in properly filtered tanks at appropriate temperatures, can have reasonable welfare. However, poor water quality, inappropriate tank mates, incorrect temperatures, and overfeeding are common problems in casual pet keeping. Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration in Xochimilco rather than releasing captive animals.
