Precision livestock farming uses sensors, cameras, and AI to monitor animal health and behaviour at scale. When implemented with welfare intent, this technology can identify suffering earlier and at larger scale than human observation.
Precision livestock farming technology offers genuine welfare benefits when used with that intent. Early detection of lameness, disease, and distress can reduce the duration of untreated suffering significantly. However, the technology is neutral — it can equally serve productivity goals without welfare improvement if farmers do not act on welfare-relevant alerts. Regulators and welfare certification bodies are beginning to explore how precision farming data could support welfare assurance, but standards are not yet established. The key welfare question is not whether the technology exists but whether welfare indicators are prioritised alongside or above productivity indicators in its application.
