Cold weather creates significant welfare challenges for farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife — with outdoor animals particularly vulnerable to hypothermia, frostbite, and feed deprivation.
Cold weather welfare is a seasonal welfare challenge that predictable preparation can substantially reduce. Farm animals exposed to cold without adequate shelter, dry bedding, and increased energy rations experience thermoregulatory stress that suppresses immunity and production. Neonatal mortality in outdoor lambing during cold snaps represents acute suffering that preparation and monitoring can reduce. Companion animals left outside in extreme cold without shelter suffer from frostbite and hypothermia that are entirely preventable. Wildlife cold-weather suffering is less directly addressable but is mitigated by habitat provision and winter wildlife feeding programs where appropriate.
