Organ-on-a-chip and lab-on-chip technologies use human cells grown in microfluidic devices to mimic organ function, offering more accurate safety testing results than animal models while eliminating animal suffering.
Lab-on-chip technology represents one of the most promising frontiers for replacing animal testing. Current animal models are scientifically limited as well as ethically problematic — mouse livers metabolise drugs differently from human livers, leading to both false positives and false negatives in safety testing. Human organ chips offer the potential to eliminate this source of error while removing the suffering of millions of research animals annually. Regulatory acceptance is the key bottleneck — once regulators routinely accept organ chip data, adoption will accelerate rapidly.
