Breed-specific legislation banning pit bulls and other breeds is widely implemented but poorly supported by evidence. Understanding the welfare costs of BSL and what actually works to prevent dog bites is important for advocates.
Breed-specific legislation causes direct welfare harm through the destruction of individual dogs who have not exhibited dangerous behaviour, based solely on appearance. It also causes significant harm to responsible owners who lose dogs they have raised safely. The evidence that it prevents dog bites is weak to non-existent — serious attacks involve dogs of many breeds and are driven by individual history, training, and management rather than breed. Welfare-conscious approaches focus on evidence-based bite prevention through owner education, responsible breeding, early socialisation, and management of individual dogs with demonstrated dangerous behaviour.
