Reptile welfare is compromised by the widespread belief that they are simple, low-maintenance pets requiring minimal care. In reality, most pet reptile species have complex environmental, thermal, nutritional, and social needs that are poorly met in typical home settings. The result is chronic suboptimal welfare affecting millions of animals — not through obvious cruelty but through ignorance. Investment in species-specific welfare guidelines, better retailer education standards, and discouraging the most challenging species from beginners would significantly reduce this suffering.
