Wild Animal Suffering Interventions: Helping Wildlife at Scale

Wild animals experience enormous amounts of suffering from disease, predation, parasites, and starvation. An emerging field asks how we might ethically and practically reduce suffering in wild populations.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wild animal suffering represents the largest possible scale of welfare concern -- the billions of wild animals alive at any moment collectively experience enormous suffering from natural causes. This does not mean humans can or should intervene in all natural processes, but targeted, evidence-based interventions that reduce specific sources of wild animal suffering -- disease vaccination, safe contraception for overpopulated species, treatment of identifiable conditions -- may be welfare-positive if carefully implemented. The field is young and contested, but taking wild animal suffering seriously is a logical extension of animal welfare concern to its largest domain.
